Bronson watched as Antonio waited for the sound of the first owl’s hoot. It came and within a minute was followed by another one coming from the opposite direction. “They’re in position,” Antonio said. “Let’s move.”

They scattered and advanced.

As Bronson approached the house, he focused on the windows. No one seemed to be watching them. He could hear the TV blaring. The volume had been turned up high, too high for Bronson’s comfort.

Something wasn’t right.

He paused and scanned the area. The car was parked in the driveway just as it had been when he was first here. The lights, inside and out, illuminated the house. No one peeked from behind the curtains. All seemed well. Yet …

Yet …

A chill covered Bronson as they approached the porch. As illogical as it was, he half-expected it to blow up.

Antonio took the initiative. He reached the door first and knocked. In a loud voice, he said, “FBI. We need to talk. Open up.”

They waited.

Nothing happened.

“FBI. Open the door.”

Still nothing.

Antonio reached for the doorknob. The unlocked door opened a crack. Antonio and Bronson exchanged looks.

Bronson pushed the door open and stepped to the side.

And waited.

Seeing that no one was going to greet them, Antonio stepped in, followed by his men and Bronson. Their guns pointed to the right, to the left, up high. One by one, they cleared each room.

Bronson headed toward the back of the house. After a second attempt, he located the room with bars on the windows.

It stood empty.

Except for the FBI men, the entire house was uninhabited. Bronson opened the door leading to the back of the house. That’s when he saw it.

A road that led away from the house.

That’s what had bothered him. He knew only one road existed that led to the mansion, but he had failed to check to see if a different road behind the house had been constructed.

Bronson mentally hit his forehead. He should have known. He should have thought about the possibility of a second road. Now Sophie and the kids and possibly Mike had been taken away via this road.

Antonio stepped outside onto the porch and stood beside Bronson. “Do you think Francesco and Leonardo suspected we were coming and used this road to take their hostages away?”

The thought had occurred to him, but before he could answer, the FBI man who was checking the road said, “Fresh tire marks.”

Antonio nodded. “Let’s follow that road but we’re probably too late.” He turned and headed back inside the house. “Let’s move it.” He turned to Bronson. “No word from Mike?”

Bronson shook his head.

“Any idea what happened to him?”

Bronson retrieved his cell and looked at the screen. Three cell bars told him that inside the house, he had service. He punched in Mike’s familiar number.

A couple of feet away from him, Mike’s cell rang.

Bronson headed toward it and picked it up. “They got him.”

Bronson’s world collapsed around him.

Shiiit!
